Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists identify and maximise movement potential through the promotion of preventative health care, treatment and rehabilitation. The core skills include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and knowledge of normal movement.Movement dysfunctions are common in many children, especially in children with special needs. This includes clumsiness, low muscle tone, poor posture, poor coordination or a lack of smoothness of movement. A physiotherapist experienced in movement can identify all of these problems although they may not be immediately obvious or marked.
Individual exercise programs will improve daily living functions and enhance concentration. This facilitates learning, improves mood and behaviour and importantly helps build self esteem which is often low in children with special needs. This can be achieved through balance, strength and co-ordination activities, toys, games or other special equipment.
At Port Phillip Specialist School the physiotherapist helps the family understand the child's problem and teach parents or carers the skills to develop the child's ability to perform everyday tasks.
Physiotherapy at Port Phillip Specialist School works in conjunction with other health professionals to meet all the child's needs in a thorough and comprehensive way. This includes referrals to other health professionals where appropriate.
